There’s the old Berkeley joke that most vegan restaurants should skip the formality of a grand opening and just go right out of business. Maybe this rendition of a ‘non-dairy vegetarian’ restaurant will be different.
The food is good (and I say this as an omnivore), the vegan ‘work arounds’ for entrees imaginative, the service quick, and the staff helpful and thoroughly lacking any pretense of existing on a higher plane. The space is bright and open, minimally modern – with nary a single picture of any spiritual leader in sight.
And – who knew? – it seems distilled spirits are vegan. There’s a mighty impressive bar against a side wall. Had it not been 1230 in the afternoon, I might’ve opted for a single malt whisky rather than a large carrot juice.

I've been to one of the Herbivores in San Francisco (there are two) a few times, and I liked it enough to be pretty excited that there was one opening in the East Bay. I'm glad to hear it's open now!
