Here’s something a bunch of parents in my daughter’s school do—and maybe there’s an interest here.
Over the years, my wife has patiently waited for me on vacations as I lurch along with a tripod and bag of camera equipment – always on the hunt for that great image. Still, I see her roll her eyes as I pack 30 lbs of photo gear into the trunk for a day trip down the coast.
A monthly photo excursion helps those of us who love photography to go someplace close (Little Yosemite, the shipyards in Richmond, the military base in Alameda), spend a clutch of hours, and not feel guilty.
What the group I belong to does: after finding a weekend day where most of the usual group can slip away for a while, we meet pretty early and head out in carpools. It’s usually 4 or 5 hours, followed by a snack in a coffee shop somewhere – and then back to our homes.
And the mix is great – everyone from a guy who insists on using his cell-phone camera for capturing images, film buffs and digital fans, and, inevitably, someone with a view camera.
